Bicycle Club “Testing” 9/11 National Route
The Laurel Highlands On and Off Road Bicycle Association will hold a ride for members and other experienced on-road bicyclists as a test run for a leg of the September 11 National Memorial Trail ® on Saturday, Sept. 29.
Two options are being offered for riders. Strong riders will meet at 10 a.m. at the Flight 93 National Memorial (follow signs to designated bike-ride parking) and bicycle to Rockwood and back, approximately 44 miles.
Intermediate riders will meet at Rockwood Mill Shoppes, 450 Main St., Rockwood, at 9:30 a.m., lock their bikes and drive vehicles to designated bike-ride parking at the National Memorial. Riders will be shuttled back to their bikes for the one-way ride from Rockwood to the National Memorial (22 miles). Anyone wishing to be shuttled must e-mail LHORBA member Brad Clemenson at streams@atlanticbb.net in advance.
The 9/11 National Memorial Trail will connect New York City’s World Trade Center site, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and the Flight 93 crash site to commemorate the worst terrorist attack in America. The Washington-to-Flight 93 link will use the C&O Canal Towpath and Great Allegheny Passage to Rockwood, but an on-road link is needed at least temporarily from Rockwood to Flight 93.
MEDIA NOTE: The bicyclists will use Buckstown Road, Bridge Street, Stutzmantown Road, Route 31, pass through Uptown Somerset, and follow Water Level Road between Somerset and Rockwood. If you want to get photos or video, please use the cell numbers above to contact us during the ride to determine about what time we would pass where. The best option will be to meet riders starting the ride at 10 a.m. at Flight 93 National Memorial, where brief comments will be offered to kick off the ride.
